Michigan Association of Land Banks’ Chair/President Kelly Clarke welcomes you with this “Letter from the Chair.”
I am proud to represent this organization, whose mission is to ensure that Michigan land banks have the state-wide policies, support, and capacity to effectively operate local land bank programs. Land banking has been a critical tool in Michigan to help revitalize distressed communities. These organizations are as unique as the communities they serve, but they have nevertheless been a tool for positive change and community progress.
This website was created to be an accessible reference and resource exchange for land banks, and we’ve expanded these peer-to-peer learning efforts through our annual leadership summit. At our most recent conference in Marquette, we had a chance to reflect on what has been accomplished in the past year and talked through the opportunities and challenges coming up. We also recently completed a strategic plan that addressed new avenues for us to be a resource to the land banks scattered throughout Michigan. MALB will do this by supporting research and evaluation of land bank efforts, support an active policy agenda, and strive to be a champion for the people and places struggling most with disinvestment and blight in Michigan’s communities. We’re looking forward to implementing these plans and seeing land banks continue to grow.
